Appleton & Lange Review of Pediatrics (Appleton & Lange Review Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Appleton & Lange (15 March, 2003)
Authors: Sara, Md. Viessman and Martin I., Md. Lorin
Average review score:

Much harder than the actual test
I just finished the shelf exam having studied this book exhaustively, and I honestly think there's simply too much detail. Endless questions on the details of Riley-Day syndrome, McCune-Albright syndrome, and parasites found only in Africa. The test was certainly not easy, but the bulk of it dealt with the more common diseases like Henoch-Schonlein Purpura and Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever. I'd go with blueprints first and foremost, maybe supplement with a question book like this one and don't get too caught up in the details of obscure diseases.

In addition, some of the questions are just plain wrong now, such as questions on vaccination recommendations that are out-of-date.

Overall, I'd still recommend this book, so long as you don't get too depressed over not knowing the hardest questions.

Good and Consise
I found the book to be a detailed, yet concise review for the boards. The material covered is excellent, but the questions do not reflect the USMLE format.

got the job done
I used this book as a primary resource for my 3rd year shelf exam (with Blueprints as a fall-back), and I got a 4.0. I saw a number of questions and scenarios on the test that I recogized from this text.

Tom Swift and His Motor-Boat or the Rivals of Lake Carlopa
Published in Hardcover by Applewood Books (November, 1992)
Author: Victor, II Appleton
Average review score:

fun.light adventure full of the flavor of the early 1900's
I was compelled to buy this book because my Dad grew up reading the original Tom Swift books and I grew up reading the Tom Swift, Jr. books in the 50's and 60's. I had never had a chance to read any of the original stories until I found this website and when I did, well, nostalgia took over.

This book is fun to read both for the story, which for Tom Swift fans from the 60's is in keeping with those stories, and for the flavor of the early 1900's. This book was written in about 1910 and the grammar and "dialogue" are of that era. Anyone who has read a book by a modern day writer trying to write as if he was in 1910 will be able to feel the difference. Tom's adventures are what you would expect in a book aimed at pre-teens, but the "Science" he uses is 1910 and presents the reader with a wonderfull picture of ordinary life in that era.

I highly recommend this book for anyone who wishes to get a view of 1910 regardless of whether or not the reader is a former Tom Swift Jr., Hardy Boys, or Nancy Drew fan.

A very good story from 1910
In this sequel to Tom Swift and His Motor-Cycle, Tom purchases the motorboat used by the gang in their nefarious activities. In the midst of his competition with Andy Foger, Tom discovers that someone is tampering with his boat. Who is tampering with the boat, and what are they up to? As usual, Tom combines his love of things mechanical with his boyish energy and big heart to help his friends and bring the villains to justice.

Once again, this book is also a wonderful window on the United States of 1910. While reading, you can see the comparative simplicity of mechanical devices back then, and the simplicity of life. Tom Swift presents a good role model, which is a definite plus, and the story is quite fascinating.

Eradicate Sampson, the African-American character is back, but this time the racial epithets are missing, which goes a long way towards making the story acceptable. This book begins with a synopsis of the first one, so let me suggest that this book may actually be a better starting point for reading the series. Overall this was a great book, and I highly recommend it.

Great gift for a young person . . . .
This fine facsimile of a classic 1910 boys' adventure book would make a beautiful gift. Young people up to about age 14 would love it. Tom discovers a secret tunnel dug by criminals to access Swift Enterprises grounds and steal his secrets. He soups up a motorboat to get double the original speed. At one point, he fights for his life as he tries to outrace a boat full of gunmen from a criminal gang. Tom is kidnapped and imprisoned, but escapes. The style is lucid, simple, and clean for young readers. The setting of 1910 adds an exotic quality to today's readers. These were the best-selling boys books of all time, with possible exception of Hardy Boys. Your son or grandson would love it. In a beautiful reprint of the original edition.

Tom Swift and His Submarine Boat
Published in Paperback by Indypublish.Com (December, 2002)
Author: Victor, II Appleton
Average review score:

Tom's Slightly Less Than Amazing Adventure
Judging this both as an original Tom Swift story, and as a Quiet Vision reprint, it is not a first-rate effort.

The plot is juvenile, even by 1910 juvenile standards, and way below the series average. Much of the science is wrong, and was obviously wrong even in 1910. The characters are not shown off to their best adventage -- way too much Mr. "Bless my collar buttons" Damon, and not enough Eradicate, too little Ned, and too much pilot and sea captain guest characters. Eradicate may be politically incorrect for newer generations, but he's one of the most interesting characters in the series, and he's THERE -- at a time when many Americans pretended that black people did not even exist in fiction.

The reprint -- good paper quality, and a good sturdy binding. I wish they'd gone with a smaller typeface and more pages (at a quarter-inch, this just "feels" to thin). And while they've cleaned up old typographic errors and mis-spellings, they've inserted even more new ones, in a very poor proofreading effort.

But it's still TOM SWIFT, you can hold it in your hands and read it, and it's under ten bucks -- and that's not bad.

A great book.
The tom swift line of books have been books of a smart boy and his adventures with many contraptions he creates or buys. Not only does Victor Appleton create a world of good clean fun, he creates a place you can visit as many times as you want.

If you have not read any of the Tom Swift books, start with the first one, Tom Swift and his Motercycle.

A Great Story Which Was Never Published
This book was supposed to be the 12th book in the Tom Swift series published by Wanderer. However, despite listings in BOOKS IN PRINT and some other places, it was not released. The story was written and a manuscript is part of the Stratemeyer Syndicate Records Collection at NYPL but since the Syndicate was sold to Simon & Schuster in 1984, the book was not printed or distributed.

American Indian Design and Decoration
Published in Hardcover by Peter Smith Pub (June, 1971)
Author: Leroy H. Appleton
Average review score:

A history of native art!
I wanted to learn about the western hemisphere art as a whole and not country by country and that's precisely what I found in this book. Well detailed designs and astonishing information such as poems, myths, symbols explanations... unfortunately, some countries -as Ecuador- are not represented and that's a pitty because they have many motifs to show to the world. Anyway, I think this is a must in decorators' or art historian's library!

Appleton and Lange's 1999 Drug Guide is great
I have been using the drug guides by this publisher since 1994. It is a great resource and has saved me a lot of time that I would've wasted trying to wade through the PDR. I use my older copies in the interview rooms at work and even the MD's use them...because it is so user friendly. Thanks, Nancy Sanchez, RN, CS, ARNP, Adv. Practice Nurse in Terrell, TX

Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh: The Most Dangerous Man Since Jesus Christ
Published in Paperback by Osho Viha (August, 1987)
Author: Sue Appleton
Average review score:

For those who want to know a bit about OSHO and his life !
This book is a biography of Bhagwan Shree Rajneesh (OSHO), the spiritual master that developed a huge legion of followers around the world. From the very beginning of his life, when he was a child and started to live with his grandfather and his grandmother, passing through the college period and his illumination, the book give us a clear impression about the most important events happened during OSHO life. The controversial period in the USA and the return to Poona are mentioned in the book too, and details about the conflict generated by OSHO's extradition from the USA, the period in the prison, and all the events that followed this episode are described here. The way the book was written helps to develop an intense desire to go ahead and just stop reading at the end.
